Zero waste in action: QLDC adopts new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan

Big news for our district’s zero waste journey, QLDC has just adopted its new Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP), and it’s packed with practical steps to help us waste less and do more for the planet. 

Right now, about 960 tonnes of waste head to Victoria Flats Landfill from our district every week. That’s a mountain of stuff, much of it reusable, compostable, or avoidable. The new plan lays out how we can flip the script: better systems, smarter choices, and stronger community partnerships to keep resources in use and out of the ground. 

What’s new in the 2025 plan?

Following public consultation in June and a detailed review of 68 submissions, several key updates were made: 

• A future kerbside organics collection to reduce food and green waste.
• Stronger measures to tackle construction and demolition waste.
• Clearer commitments to community partnerships and the visitor sector.
• Greater alignment with circular economy principles and climate goals.
• Improved monitoring, data collection, and infrastructure investment to support long-term change.

This isn’t just about bins and recycling, it’s about building a district where waste is the exception, not the norm. Less landfill means fewer emissions, healthier ecosystems, and more resilience in the face of climate change. It’s a win for biodiversity, a win for community, and a win for future generations.
