On 27 June 2019, Queenstown Lakes District Council declared a climate and ecological emergency. Since then, QLDC has developed our Climate and Biodiversity Plan, which sets out how we're going to respond to biodiversity loss and climate change in Queenstown Lakes.

Climate Impacts & Challenges
Climate change will significantly impact our district’s climate, environment, and way of life. Responding to climate change isn’t always easy and we know our community wants to see leadership from Council. This isn’t something we can do alone – nearly every challenge we face will require a team effort from everyone in the district.

Our partnership with Kāi Tahu underpins the Climate and Biodiversity Plan and has strengthened over the past three years through the shared development of the Grow Well | Whaiora Spatial Plan. Building on this partnership, the Climate and Biodiversity Plan has also been informed by Climate Reference Group representation from Aukaha and Te Ao Mārama on behalf of Kāi Tahu.

They range from embedding climate action into Council decision-making to building food resilience, supporting community groups to restore our indigenous biodiversity and many areas in between.
